Renting a crane in Winnipeg or elsewhere may seem straightforward, but there are several things to do to prepare your site for its arrival. Proper site preparation is essential to ensure the crane operates safely and efficiently.

Keep reading to learn more about the crucial elements of site preparation and how to make sure everything is ready for the crane’s arrival.

Contracts

Before your crane rental arrives on your site, ensure that you understand the contract with your crane services company. A reputable crane company will have a clear contract with price and terms so there are no surprises in the end.

Route and Roads

Ensure your site is access-ready well in advance of the crane's delivery date by following :

Prepare the route: make sure it is clear and free of debris and obstructions.

Address unstable terrain: fill in ditches, and reinforce or stabilize soft ground and weak spots on the access road and site.

Take out obstacles: remove obstacles, especially hazardous ones, and clear low-hanging branches.

Heed height and width restrictions along the route and on the site: check power lines, turns, bridges, etc.

Assessment of the Ground

It is important to conduct a thorough assessment of the ground where the crane will be placed. It must be able to support the crane’s weight and operational loads. Your crane services company can provide these types of specifications. Crane pads or outriggers can be used if your ground is not stable or firm enough.

Notification and Communication

For everyone’s safety, it's important to notify your on-site team, including project managers, workers, and subcontractors, about the crane's arrival date and planned operations. A point person should be designated to manage information flow and address any concerns, especially on the day that your crane will be delivered. Furthermore, plan for a means to communicate with your crane service company and your site crew during the delivery. Lastly, you will also need to communicate with local authorities in advance of the crane’s arrival to see if its travel route or presence on your site will impact public roads or utilities.

Emergency Plan

Be sure that everyone on site is aware of safety and emergency protocols. These should include designating trained emergency coordinators to lead in case of an accident and establishing clear evacuation routes and assembly points. Pre-operation checks should be incorporated once the crane arrives. As should weather monitoring. Have a plan in place for sudden weather shifts, such as high winds or lightning, on the day of delivery and as long as the crane is on your site.
